A Wolf in Wool turns an old metaphor into an unsettling physical image. A wolf stands upright in the darkness wearing one sheep as a hooded garment. Its white fleece surrounds the wolf’s body while the sheep’s head, arms, and legs hang together across the front, leaving both predator and disguise plainly visible.

The wolf isn’t transformed into a sheep. That distinction matters.

This is a costume.

The painting plays with the uncomfortable space between concealment and recognition—what we pretend not to see, what people wear in order to belong, and how little disguise may actually be necessary when appearances are convenient enough to accept.

Against the deep black, burgundy, and violet background, the pale wool takes on an almost glowing presence. The wolf remains composed above it, creating an image that can feel humorous at first glance and considerably darker after a second.

The canvas reproduction brings that contrast closer to the physical quality of the original acrylic work. The textured poly-cotton surface complements the painted fleece and fur, while the vivid, fade-resistant print preserves the subtle grays, soft whites, pink skin tones, and heavy surrounding darkness.

A dark contemporary fable about appearances, identity, deception, and the danger of recognizing the wolf only after deciding the wool was convincing enough.
